Coins of the Italian Republic: Italy of Arts Series

Situated on a calcareous plateau overhanging the Mediterranean Sea, the ancient Greek city of Selinunte was supposedly founded in 650 b.C. and reached its highest magnificence in the 6th and 5th centuries b.C. This archaeological jewel has been destroyed and rebuilt by the Carthaginians.
Its only remains are magnificent architectures, like the Temple of Hera and remarkable examples of fine arts, such as the wonderful metopes.

Obverse: Temple “E” of Selinunte, dedicated to Hera, (5th Century b.C.); around “REPUBBLICA”; in exergue “ITALIANA”; below, “A. MASINI” between two details from the reverse of an incuse coin; around, beading.
Reverse: metope detail of temple “C” of Selinunte, with the myth of Perseus and the Medusa dated 5th Century b.C. (Palermo, Regional Archaeological Museum); above, “R”; around “ITALIA DELLE ARTI”; centre left, detail from the reverse of an incuse coin; right, “2013”; in exergue, “SELINUNTE”, “5 EURO”; around, beading.
