Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus was honoured with the title of Augustus in 27 B.C. He has been the first and greatest emperor of Rome that achieved its largest territorial extent under his guidance. His long reign was distinguished by the Pax Augustea (Augustus’ peace), a peaceful and prosperous period that encouraged the flourishing of arts and culture. A capable strategist, state organiser, legislator and a conqueror, Augustus was also a fine and elegant writer who left a deep mark in Roman history and culture.
