Luigi Pirandello, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature 1934 “for his bold and ingenious revival of dramatic and scenic art”, completely transformed the theatre of the 20th century, becoming one of the greatest dramatists of history and protagonists of the Italian culture. The author’s portrait engraved on the obverse is echoed on the reverse by one of the “telamoni” of the temple of Zeus Olympus, in the Valle dei Templi, which is not only a symbol of Agrigento and of Sicily as a whole, but also the author’s hometown and source of inspiration for many of his plays.
