The coin is designed by Irish artist Mary Gregoriy, who won a national design competition held by the Central Bank early this year. The design depicts four metamorphic figures in a cruciform arrangement, highlighting Ireland’s strong Christian tradition. The four figures meeting in the centre of the coin are in animated conversation. Each figure holds in its hand an item that references a different aspect of how Ireland has influenced and inspired European Culture: literature, music, construction and new technology.
The coins were launched at a reception in the National Museum of Ireland, Collins Barracks, hosted by the Governor of the Central Bank, John Hurley. Speaking at the launch, Governor Hurley said, “In the past our collector coins have been very popular both at home and abroad. I have no doubt that both of these beautiful Celtic inspired coins will be just as popular with the public.”
This is the sixth euro collector coin that the Central Bank has issued. In 2003, a coin was issued to mark the occasion of the Special Olympics in Ireland, in 2004 we marked the accession of 10 new countries to the EU, in 2005 a €10 Silver Coin was minted to mark the bi-centenary of the birth of Sir William Rowan Hamilton and in 2006 the coins celebrated the centenary of the birth of Samuel Beckett. Earlier this year Ivan Mestrovic’s beautiful “Girl with Harp” design was celebrated in a joint issue with the Croatian National Bank.
