Canada 200 Dollars Gold Coin 2015 Largemouth Bass
Obverse: Susanna Blunt’s design of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
Reverse: This coin presents a dynamic portrait of a largemouth bass leaping from a tree-lined lake. Viewed from its right front side with its tail arching to the right, the largemouth seems to hover above the lake below. The large mouth from which it gets its common name is open wide, displaying its strong lower jaw. The fish's shimmering scales, delicate fins and bony dorsal fin, along with the water spraying from it as it leaps, are engraved in stunning detail. In the distant background, the shore is lined in tall conifers.
The largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) is a native North American species of black bass that inhabits lakes and rivers in southern British Columbia, eastern Saskatchewan, southern Manitoba, Ontario, and western and southern Quebec. Often the apex predator among its fish brethren in its local habitat, it is a strong and adaptable species whose ability to thrive makes it not only one of the continent's most widespread fish, but at times an invasive threat to ecosystems. Because of its popularity among anglers, the largemouth is now found around the world.
The largemouth feeds on small fish and the young of larger fish species, insects, crustaceans, frogs, and even small mammals and birds. It prefers clear clay-bottomed or gravel-bottomed slow-moving rivers, lakes, and large ponds that feature shady areas with aquatic vegetation and submerged logs where it can lie in wait for prey. It avoids sunlight through the brightest parts of the day.
The largemouth originated in south-eastern North America, from the lower Great Lakes to northern and eastern Mexico. Aided significantly by human stocking in the late 19th century, it is now found across the entire continental United States, much of Mexico, and well into many areas of southern Canada.
