Across the wilds of western North and South America stalks the world's fourth-largest cat: the cougar. Found in remote areas from southern Canada to Patagonia, the elusive Puma concolor enjoys the greatest range of any large wild animal in the entire Western hemisphere. This massive tawny cat—about the size of a leopard—stalks the landscapes where its prey lives: from the seaside to the Rocky Mountains, from deserts to boreal forests. Unlike some of its competitors, such as wolves and bears, the cougar relies primarily on its eyesight rather than its sense of smell or hearing. While cougars are believed to be colour blind, they are also known to have excellent night vision. Known primarily as the "cougar" in Canada, the "mountain lion" in the United States, and the "puma" in South America, this animal has at least 40 common names. Despite dwindling numbers in the last century, today there is evidence that the cougar is returning to some of its former ranges in central Canada and that its western populations are growing. There is much debate about whether wild cougar exist in eastern Canada. This unique size coin and low mintage is sure to be popular. Order yours today before they're all gone!
