The history of early Viking exploration in North America unravels more and more with the advancements of modern archeological technology, spinning a thrilling tale of their journey across modern-day Canada!
Obverse: Susanna Blunt’s design of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
Reverse: The image on this coin by Canadian artist John Mantha depicts an imposing Viking ship coming ashore on the rocky coast of Vinland ("the land of wine", the name given by the Vikings to the lush, abundant land far across the Atlantic). The bold captain points the way as he directs his oarsmen seated behind a row of shields. Accurately drawn from Vikings characteristics of that time, the ship, clothes, weapons, and utilities reflect historical characteristics. Contemporary accounts suggest it was a Norse merchant who first spotted the shores of New World in the late tenth century. In 1960, archaeologists unearthed a small Viking camp in Newfoundland’s L’Anse aux Meadows, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
