Francisco Franco, in full Francisco Paulino Hermenegildo Teódulo Franco Bahamonde, byname El Caudillo (“The Leader”) (born December 4, 1892, El Ferrol, Spain — died November 20, 1975, Madrid), general and leader of the Nationalist forces that overthrew the Spanish democratic republic in the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939); thereafter he was the head of the government of Spain until 1973 and head of state until his death in 1975.
