This beautiful series of $5 silver coins of Liberia is dedicated to significant milestones in the history of railroads. They feature the world’s most renowned trains in full-color stunning design. The Big Boy coin is struck in .999 pure silver in proof quality.

The Liberian Coat of Arms occupies the obverse of the silver coin. It features a coastal landscape with a ship arriving in Liberia bringing the freed slaves from America. The national motto of Liberia ‘The love of liberty brought us here’ appears on a scroll above the shield. There are also the following legends: the face value of the coin, its issuing country and year.

The reverse features a realistic colored image of the Big Boy, one of giant freight locomotives.

Union Pacific Big Boy The American Locomotive Company built between 1941 and 1944 Union Pacific Railroads 4000 Class 4-8-8-4 articulated steam locomotives named “Big Boy”. The Big Boys are articulated like the Mallet locomotive design. Twenty-five Big Boys were built, all burned coal and had large grates to burn the low-quality Wyoming coal from mines owned by the railroad. Postwar increases in the price of both coal and labor and the efficiency of diesel-electric motive power foretold a limited life for the Big Boys. The last revenue train hauled by a Big Boy ended its run early in the morning on July 21, 1959.  The Big Boys are known to render important service in the Second World War by moving a huge volume of war material and thus making a huge contribution to the war effort. The names of the coin and series are indicated along the rim of the coin. Issued with the limited mintage, each coin of the series reflects a chapter of world history and will be of particular interest to those collecting history-themed coins from around the world.
