French Gold Coins 50 Euro 2004, Bicentennial of Napoleon's coronation
ObverseOn the obverse, is a laureate portrait of Napoleon; in the background a hand bearing a crown, and a figure figure wearing a coronet, with hands clasped as in prayer. The obverse demonstrates the crowning of Josephine de Beauharnais. She was the first wife of Napoleon Bonaparte and thus the First Empress of the French. Bears the legend:- 1804 COURONNEMENT DE NAPOLÉON
Reverse
Napoleon's greatest reform of the Consulate Period was the creation of a universal system of laws that replaced contradictory and antiquated provincial policies. The Code Civil was complied, ratified, and signed under the First Consul's direction. The reverse refers to a grand ceremony in the Notre Dame Cathedral on 2nd December 1804, where the First Consul was crowned Emperor Napoleon I. On the reverse, there is a representation of a book, with the inscription on its spine:
