Obverse: Laureated head of Napoleon III, Emperor of the French, with the inscription "NAPOLEON III EMPEREUR". The engravers name BB - BARRE below the head.
Reverse: The arms of the Second French Empire of Napoleon III, featuring an eagle and inset with "golden bees" as in the tomb of King Childeric I (Two sceptres, saltier wise, through a square shield, bearing the French eagle perched, and surrounded by a chain of the grand order of the "
Legion D'honneur " (Legion of Honor), the drapery suspended from a crown and forming a canopy, behind the shield, a sceptre.); Coin value "5 FR (5 FRANCS)" at either side of shield. Around the outside above the wreath is the inscription "EMPIRE FRANCAIS", and the date is below the shield. The mintmark appears to the left of the date.
The edge is inscribed in raised lettering "DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE" (God Protect France).
